Europages is a B2B search engine and online directory aimed at European buyers, suppliers, distributors and exporters with the aim of providing customers with targeted contacts. Linking these different parties together, the company has a large amount of important statistical data about its 4million monthly visitors (5 terabytes per year).
As part of an Open Data initiative, Patrick Buisson, Marketing Manager of Europages wanted to make this data available to all their users online. Much of it has gradually been made avaialable to users: the visits by country, the keywords used, the searches by industry etc. Europages looked for a cloud based tool to make their customers by business sector data available (in the spirit of online and dynamic accessibility). Europages realized this aim choosing Bime.

With the help of Bime, the Province of British Columbia (BC, Canada’s western most province) recently published their data on the province’s court systems.

Their aim is to become more transparent and to open up their data for use by the province’s citizens, businesses, media and academics. To achieve this the department worked in partneship with Bime to produce dashboards visualizing the statistics and key measures from all the province’s courthouses. The dashboards present interactive data visualizations displaying information geographically and broken down into easily accessible, user-friendly graphs and pie charts. Users are able to drill-down and search statistics from individual regions or courthouses. Statistics include the number of new court cases, months to case conclusion, court hours and scheduled court appearances for the three levels of court in BC.

After last week’s Brit Awards, we had a look at the history of the Brits, to see who the biggest winners have been since they started in 1977. Courtesy of the Guardian Datablog we looked at all the figures.
As the names of the categories have changed over time, it was really easy to reorganise these in Bime using the ‘group’ function, and also to calculate over what period winners were recognised – Sir Paul McCartney won his first (solo) Brit in 1983 and his most recent in 2008, so with 25 years of Brit success, he tops the ‘timespan’ chart! But it is Robbie Williams who takes the overall prize, with a massive 12 Brits won at 7 different ceremonies. This success is stressed on the treemap using colour to show the number of years in which each artist was successful.

Santa must have received our wishlist this year, as over Christmas Bime featured in ReadWriteWeb’s list of the top 10 enterprise cloud apps and services of 2011. We were in fine company with companies such as Heroku and Xeround also included on the list. The author, Scott Fulton, describes a dramatic shift from 2010 to 2011 for businesses thanks to the cloud:
“In a very short time, suddenly true scalability for every IT service appeared within their reach.”
The choices for the list were evaluated partly based on the “social data flow”, a positive reflection of the buzz around Bime and thepositive press we received in 2011. Scott writes extensively about Bime’s Deja Vu data cache, which facilitates users to host their data in the cloud allowing them to use it online, anytime.

A line chart is a classic method for visualizing continuous change from one value to the next (often change over time) and just one of the many visualizations available in Bime.
When to use a line chart:
- To track rises and falls over time
- To reveal patterns in the data: trends, fluctuations, cycles, rates of change
- When the labels on the x-axis have a natural ordering (2005, 2006, 2007…)
When NOT to use a line chart:
- If your data is categorized without a natural ordering, for example by country, department, or activity, a bar or column chart works better
It can often be a challenge, however, to display a lot of trends on one line chart clearly and succinctly.
